A message from Mark Galley and Jeff Ward, Co-Chairs, Board of Directors, YMCA of Cape Breton
February 19, 2021

On behalf of the Board of Directors, the YMCA of Cape Breton announced today that Andre Gallant, CEO since 2008, will be leaving the Y at the end of February. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our operations and has played a role.

Andre Gallant shared with staff and volunteers, “The impacts of the pandemic led us to ask YMCA Canada for a formal Association review, to help guide the Y back to a more positive position. As a result of that review, it became clear that a new skill set was required. This decision will allow the organization the opportunity to plan for what lies ahead.”

As Board Co-Chair, Mark Galley added, “Andre has left us in a better-than-expected position coming out of the first year of the pandemic. The years to come will bring new challenges however, and we’ve accepted that new skills will be required.” The board acknowledges the great contribution Andre has made to the YMCA in his time as CEO. Those accomplishments include the redevelopment of the Frank Rudderham Family YMCA in downtown Sydney, tripling employment services under the Nova Scotia Works banner, opening the Membertou Branch, and tripling the availability of licensed child care. Some of the tougher decisions made have included selling Camp Barrachois and the closure of the Port Hawkesbury branch, both seen as necessary to the long-term financial health of the Cape Breton YMCA.

“I’ve worked with some wonderful, dedicated YMCA people across the country,” said Gallant, “but none can match the talent, commitment, and caring of the staff at the YMCA of Cape Breton. They embody YMCA values, and have created safe, welcoming spaces for the entire community. They held me up and made me look good every day.”

On behalf of the Board of Directors, please join us in thanking Andre for his leadership and commitment to the YMCA of Cape Breton.

As Co-chairs of the Board of Directors, both Jeff Ward and Mark Galley will provide support to the team as we begin to search for an interim CEO to support the transition. Thank you for your ongoing support to our YMCA during these unprecedented times and for your ongoing commitment to helping keep our community healthy and safe.

Sincerely,
Co-Chairs, Board of Directors, Mark Galley and Jeff Ward YMCA of Cape Breton
