February 23, 2021 —The Board of Directors of the YMCA of Cape Breton is pleased to announce the appointment of Darryl McKenzie as Interim CEO effective Monday, March 1, 2021.

Darryl will be responsible for guiding the transition of the YMCA of Cape Breton for the next six months and will support the recruitment and onboarding of the YMCA’s next permanent leader. The Board of Directors warmly thanks the YMCA’s Senior Management team for stepping in to support the day-to-day operations over the past week and our frontline staff, volunteers, members and community partners for their ongoing support.

“We are extremely fortunate to have attracted a seasoned YMCA executive to support our transition,” said Mark Galley, Co-Chair, the YMCA of Cape Breton Board. “Darryl has nearly 20 years of progressive leadership experience in YMCA and Non-Profit organizations in Canada, and will join the team working to develop our post-pandemic recovery plans.”

Darryl’s first CEO assignment was with the YMCA of Oakville where he led a complex change initiative for the organization which included an 8,000-member recreation facility, 41 childcare centers, 4 summer camp locations, and multiple community programs and outreach initiatives. Following his time in Oakville, Darryl provided interim CEO support to various YMCAs in Saskatchewan.

In March 2020 Darryl moved to Nova Scotia to provide crisis support and act as interim CEO for the YMCA of Yarmouth. Board Chair Chris Brown shared “Darryl was able to bring not only his in-depth knowledge of YMCA operations, but his expertise was instrumental in helping us assess our needs and consider all the potential options in a very complex situation.”

Darryl has an MBA from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. Darryl has also studied non-profit leadership at Harvard University. Darryl’s experience in change management and YMCA operations equips him ideally for this role.

Darryl is currently residing in Dartmouth and will be joining the team in Cape Breton on March 1st. Our transition team has begun to orientate Darryl to our YMCA community and to set up times to introduce him to our staff and volunteers.

Please join the Board of Directors in welcoming Darryl McKenzie to Cape Breton.

Sincerely,

Co-Chair, Board of Directors, Mark Galley and Jeff Ward
