The Opportunity

The YMCA of Cape Breton is looking for an energetic, fun, and childcare-experienced individual to enter the new role of our After-School Program Coordinator. They will be responsible for the oversight of our four current after-school programs in local Cape Breton Regional Municipality schools as well as lead the expansion of our after-school program in 2-4 additional schools outside of the CBRM in 2022.

Position Summary

The After-School Program Coordinator will work in the YMCA of Cape Breton’s Childcare Division, reporting to the Director of our Early Learning Centre. The After-School Program Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing all current off-site childcare programs at Brookland Elementary School, Harborside Elementary School, Glace Bay Elementary School, as well as the development of new after school programs in 2-4 rural communities outside of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in 2022.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage a strong team of After School Program staff to deliver play-based learning curriculum to children.
  • Ensure licensing requirements for all off sites- correspondence with regional/provincial licensing staff, ensure all paperwork is in order for licensing inspections, support staff at all locations to ensure licensing regulations are being followed
  • Adhere to offsite childcare budget and manage appropriately for each
  • Teaching up to 50% of the day in a local after-school
  • Plan curriculum in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Nova Scotia Standards to foster maximum development for each child’s potential and growth
  • Monitor and record individual children’s progress through daily observation and development evaluations
  • Responsible for the physical, social, emotional, affective and cognitive development of the children in the program
  • Maintain contact with all the children to meet their needs – security, protection, affection, discipline, stimulation, warmth and comfort; respect each child’s abilities and provide unconditional acceptance of the child
  • Develop a relationship with families and meet their needs of comfort, security, warmth and acceptance as part of the program
  • Supportive visits to YMCA of Cape Breton after-school programs at sites across Cape
  • Build a strong team of staff through continuous communications, staff meetings, mentoring, and
  • Perform a various human resources tasks such as hiring, onboarding, performance review and development etc.
  • Communicate concerns and suggestions to the Director
  • Keep up to date with staffing information and the Child Care Department’s Policies including Behaviour Guidance, Child Abuse Protocol and Confidentiality
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Early Learning

 

Qualifications

 

  • Post-secondary education in a related program (childcare, human services, social services etc)
  • 2-3 years in a Supervisory position
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain a current first aid and CPR
  • Ability to travel across Cape Breton
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and have access to vehicle

Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check and a Child Abuse Registry Check. Employees will be required to complete YMCA Child Protection Training.
