The YMCA of Cape Breton is seeking a dynamic, motivated and energetic leader to join our team as our Youth/Camp Coordinator in our Health Fitness and Aquatics division.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Program and Wellness Manager, the Youth/Camp Coordinator will develop and implement programming for children, youth, teens and young adults. The Youth/Camp Coordinator aims to provide youth an opportunity to gain valuable life skills and ultimately improve their self-confidence and opportunities for the future. The Youth/Camp Coordinator will also plan and oversee our annual summer camps, PD day camps and holiday camps. They will also supervise the youth program staff and volunteers, mainly responsible for teaching, coaching and mentoring. This position will also be part of the Duty Manager team, ensuring our YMCA has supervisory coverage during all peak programming periods.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Support the Program and Wellness Manager to plan, develop, implement and oversee all Child and Youth Programs.
- Help organize and facilitate various youth programs such as Safe Sisters program, Youth Zone, and Y Minds and oversee youth cupboard.
- Hire, coach, mentor and support child/youth and camp staff and volunteers.
- Develop experiences and learning opportunities for youth in our community.
- Ensure quality, inclusive, meaningful programming for youth.
- Serve as a role model and mentor for youth participants.
- Work with external partners on collaborative programs and projects.
- Promote, plan, develop and supervise the operations of the Summer Day Camps/School PD/Holiday Camp programs.
- Deal effectively and professionally with YMCA members’, volunteers’ and parents’ concerns.
- Coordinate Community Programming Centre calendar.
- Active participant on our YMCA Child Safeguarding committee.
- Adhere to SAM standards, ensuring high level of member satisfaction.
- Evaluate, present and initiate recommendations to enhance participant experience and satisfaction with youth/camp programming.
- Responsible for the implementation and management of the youth/camp annual budget.
- Provide support to Association promotions, events, and overall program delivery.

Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in recreation or related field.
- 1-3 years supervisory experience, leading a team of staff and/or volunteers.
- Experience in program planning for children and youth ages 3-12.
- Related experience in the field of community development, leadership training and recreation, sport and culture program planning.
- Demonstrated experience with mentoring/coaching/facilitating skills.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills to work with youth, parents, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple, competing deadlines and priorities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation/workshop facilitation skills.
- Having fun while maintaining professionalism – we work together to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
- Schedule flexibility – this position will require some evening and weekends
Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
