The Opportunity

YESS is the Government of Canada’s commitment to help young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition into the labour market. The Youth Leadership Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of the YMCA of Cape Breton Youth Employment Strategy programming and serves as a youth advisor, empowering and advocating on behalf of participants.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plan the delivery of the overall program and its activities in accordance with the mission and
    the goals of the organization and project;
  • Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful outcomes
    of the program;
  • Coordinate training sessions for participants;
  • Deliver a variety of employment readiness workshops;
  • Develop/administer a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the program and to identify areas for improvement;
  • Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization;
  • Develop/utilize forms and records to document program
  • Oversee the collection and maintenance of records on the clients of the program for statistical purposes, meanwhile adhering to prescribed privacy and confidentiality policies;
  • In consultation with Nova Scotia Works Employment Services Centres and other community organizations, as required, recruit, interview and select participants – with an emphasis on underrepresented persons in the labour market in Nova Scotia;
  • Implement the human resources policies, procedures and practices of the organization;
  • Collaborate with service providers, to develop comprehensive programming and offer true wrap around services to the participants, and;
  • Establish partnerships and leverage resources within the community to offer comprehensive life, work and learning experiences to participants

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree or post-secondary education in Human Services field or related field of study or a combination of education and work-related experience;
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills – experience working with cloud computing considered an asset;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines and tasks;
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information;
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in the resolution of issues, process improvement and evaluation;
  • High level of initiative is needed to work independently and respond to unanticipated items; Committed to professional development and career self-management;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills – experience facilitating considered an asset, and;
  • Schedule flexibility to accommodate variations outside of regular business hours, as needed.
  • Travel required.

Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
