The Opportunity

The YMCA of Cape Breton is looking for a Program Coordinator to join our team at the Frank Rudderham Family YMCA. In this 4-month role, you’ll lead the planning and delivery of summer day camp and recreational programs, support staff development, and help ensure smooth operations.

The YMCA Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and delivery of inclusive and engaging programs for children, youth, adults, families and seniors. This role provides lead support for Summer Day Camp and works closely with the Manager of Recreation and Day Camp to ensure high-quality programming and operational consistency.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Lead the design and execution of the YMCA of Cape Breton summer day camps
• Develop, implement, and oversee age‑appropriate general programming for children, youth, adults, families, and older adults outside of camp programs.
• Coordinate guest presenters and enrichment activities across all program areas.
• Maintain and organize program resources, including a staff resource library and activity kits.
• Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and training camp and program staff.
• Manage program logistics across both camp locations
• Utilize digital tools for scheduling, attendance tracking, and staff communication.
• Ensure compliance with YMCA safety, accessibility, and operational standards and the Y Way.
• Provide direct support to the Manager of Recreation and Day Camp in daily operations

Skills and Qualifications

• Strong organizational and planning skills
• Experience in multi-age program coordination and camp leadership
• Staff training and mentorship capabilities
• Proficiency with digital tools for scheduling and communication
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Commitment to YMCA mission, values, and inclusive practices
• Recreation Management, Child and Youth Studies, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in recreational programming, camp leadership, or program coordination.
• Experience working with children, youth, adults, and seniors in structured recreation or community settings.
• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple programs and support staff or volunteers.
• Comfortable using digital tools for scheduling, communication, and program tracking.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification.
• Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required prior to employment.
• HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development certification is considered an asset

Please Note:

Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
