The Opportunity

As a Camp Counsellor at the YMCA of Cape Breton, you will play a vital role in creating a fun, safe, and engaging camp experience for all participants. You will lead activities, ensure safety protocols are followed, and support campers in their daily adventures.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise and engage with campers during daily activities.
  • Lead and facilitate games, crafts, and other recreational activities.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers by following established protocols.
  • Assist with organizing and leading walking trips and field trips.
  • Perform safety assessments/checks during playground visits and field trips.
  • Handle camper behavior issues and conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Camp Lead
  • Assist with attendance tracking
  • Support and mentor campers, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Help with the planning and execution of special events and activities.
  • Organize and take inventory of camp supplies, notifying the Camp Lead when more supplies are needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a camp or educational setting.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle conflicts and behavior issues professionally.
  • Creative and energetic personality.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.
  • Must be determined, genuine, welcoming, hopeful, nurturing, and fun.

Please Note:

Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
