The Opportunity

Are you compassionate, patient, and passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with enhanced needs? As a Summer Day Camp Counselor providing One-on-One Support at the YMCA of Cape Breton, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that every camper has a positive and inclusive camp experience. You will work closely with individual campers, providing personalized support and care to help them thrive in the camp environment.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide one-on-one support to campers with enhanced needs, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Assist campers with daily activities, including games, crafts, and recreational activities, adapting as necessary to meet their individual needs.
  • Implement and follow individualized care plans and behavior management strategies.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Camp Lead, and parents/guardians.
  • Monitor and document camper progress, behavior, and any incidents.
  • Assist with organizing and leading walking trips and field trips, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Perform safety assessments/checks during playground visits and field trips.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment, encouraging social interaction and participation.
  • Handle camper behavior issues and conflicts in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Support the planning and execution of special events and activities.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience working with children with enhanced needs in a camp, educational, or similar setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle conflicts and behavior issues professionally and compassionately.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Creative, patient, and energetic personality.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.
  • Must be determined, genuine, welcoming, hopeful, nurturing, and fun.

Please Note:

Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
