Sod-Turning Ceremony for Cove Guest Home Childcare Centre, Operated by YMCA of Cape Breton

Sydney, NS – September 6th, 2024 – The YMCA of Cape Breton and Cove Guest Home are pleased to announce a sod-turning ceremony to mark the construction of a much-anticipated new childcare centre. The event took place on Monday, September 9th at 11:00 AM at the rear parking lot of the Carl E. Rideout House, located at 49 Churchill Drive.

This exciting project represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing need for quality childcare in the community. Funded by the Province’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, through the Canada-Nova Scotia Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, the new 50 space centre will offer a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive, and families can feel supported. This project is also made possible by the support of the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care.

“This new centre will provide a wonderful learning environment for children and a tremendous support for long-term care staff working in the area. Childcare centres and long-term care homes are central parts of our communities. We are pleased to support efforts to bring them together at this site,” shares Honourable Barbara Adams, Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care.

The ceremony will include remarks from key representatives of both the YMCA of Cape Breton and Cove Guest Home, followed by a celebratory sod-turning. Afterward, guests are invited to enjoy a light luncheon at the Cove Guest Home.

“The Cove Guest Home is thrilled to be partnering with the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the YMCA of Cape Breton to soon open an innovative new childcare facility on site”, said Cheryl Deveaux, CEO of the Cove Guest Home. “Having safe, flexible and affordable childcare is so important for our healthcare staff. The Cove and the YMCA will also partner to develop intergenerational programs to build relationships between the children and seniors through shared programming.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Cove Guest Home on this vital initiative,” said Sabrina Vatcher, CEO of YMCA of Cape Breton. “This new childcare centre will play an essential role in providing families with the support they need and fostering a vibrant, healthy community.”

The YMCA of Cape Breton and Cove Guest Home were pleased to see members of the media, community leaders, and residents to join them in celebrating this important milestone. The new childcare centre is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
